Midterm Historical Montage

My mid-term proposal on the history of the black people from slavery to the Presidency of Obama. My montage shows a progression from slavery to presidency, and shows the message that where there was once slavery and persecution, there becomes celebration, where there was once bondage, there can become freedom.

Homework 6 Part 1:
What is a vector shape? Vector shapes are based on mathematical calculations instead of pixels. This lets the image to be resized or transformed without degrading the quality of the image.

How do you access the shape library in photoshop CS3? It is under the rectangle tool, custom shape tool. There is a popup menu at the top under shape that will display the shape library.

What is the short cut command to access the marquee tool? Pressing the M key.

Give four advantages to working with vector shapes. Name one disadvantage to working with vector shapes. When a vector shape is zoomed in or out, it does not lose any quality, 2. Crisp art quality, 3. Smaller file size than raster images, 4. Photo realistic images. Disadvantage is putting vector images with pixel images can look cartoonish.

Definition of terms:
Ascender—In case of an uppercase letter, the part of the letter that is above the x-height.
Descender—part of letter descends below the baseline.
San serif—category of type face, without serif.
Serif—category of type face, tail on end of letters.
X-height—top of lowercase letter to bottom of lowercase letter.
Baseline—where every letters sits on.
Weight—stroke of a character, heavier are bold typestyles.
Stress—thickness part of letter, stroke.
Counter—inside any enclosed space (such as an o)
Bowl—the curved part of a character that encloses the curved part of some letters.
Stem—main part of the letter.

What does typeface mean? Characteristic of typeface are serif, bracket and stroke width. It is the specific letterform design of an alphabet.

Give an example of a light weight font and a heavy font that you have on your system (not from the website). Times Roman, Regular is a light weight font, and TW Cen MT Condensed Extra bold is a heavy font.

What is the difference between a font and a type family? Give an example. A font is a collection of characters in a typeface, including capitals and lowercase, punctuation, and symbols. A font type family is based on common design characteristics of the letter. An example is the Stone family, which has stone serif, stone sans and stone informal typeface fonts.

Write one paragraph about Johann Gutenberg and his contribution to the printed word. Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press in the 1450’s. He designed type that would be evenly spaced. He borrowed guilders from Johann Fust and later became partners with him. When Gutenberg later could not pay off his debt to Fust, Fust sued and took all of his equipment. Gutenberg did print the first bible, the Gutenberg Bible in 1455.

Why is a modern typeface not an appropriate font for the web? Because they have vertical stress, with long and thin serifs and minimal brackets. There is a high contrast between thick and thin elements, and make it harder to read.

Why is Baskerville considered a readable typeface? Because it has small serifs.

What characteristic (one of the type terms from above) specifically makes it legible? The counter space. If it is too small, it would be hard to read.

Homework 4 Part 1:

What is gamma, and how does it affect graphics displayed on monitors? Gamma controls the brightness and contrast as it is displayed on your computer. Computers have different color cards, so the colors can appear differently on different computers.

What is bit depth and how does higher bit depth affect the file size? Bit depth equals the number of colors. If it is only two bit depth, then the colors are black and white. The bit depth controls the number of colors you can see on your monitor, and it is dependent on the monitor card you have in your system. Higher bit depth also equals higher file size because of more colors.

Give an example of a cultural influence of color. In our culture, black is identified with funerals and death. In the handout, the black color in Japan is identified with weddings. In Thailand, purple is the color of mourning. In our culture, purple is for royalty.

Define luminance smoothing. Luminance smoothing eliminates noise in grayscale areas. Luminance smoothing smoothes out the graininess in an image.

What is camera raw? What is advantageous about raw files? Camera raw provides more flexibility in correcting an image because it contains more information than a jpeg file and captures a wider range of colors. Camera raw is like the camera negative.

Homework 4 Part 2:

The main difference I see with using duotone and the colorization we learned in this chapter is that duotone is only working with two colors, where colorization lets you using many colors. Also, the advantage to the cololization techniques discussed in the chapter, allow you to have alot of decisions on correcting a photo. Duotone is a nice technique for wanting a printed color graphic without the cost of all the colors.

Homework 4 Part 3:

The two images I have are a cross, and a sky with clouds/bright sun. I wanted a purplish background, and wanted the brightness of the sun to be in the yellow hues with somewhat of a halo effect.

Duotone is a contrast of black and color halftones. It brings out middle tones and highlights of an image. Duotones originated from Cyanotype (which is cyan-blue) and halftone. Color images in newspapers and comic books are halftone. Photoshop lets you change your image to accent the highlights and middle tones (black halftones) and to choose another ink as a second color.

Duotones are only two colors, and can be two different colors, not just black and another color. Many photographers use Photoshop Duotone to improve grayscale prints. It can also be used to creating sepia toned images.

Duotones increase the range of a grayscale image. When printing grayscale, usually a printer can print about 50 levels of gray per link. If an image is only printed using black ink, it can look courser than the same image printed using two inks, with each producing 50 levels of gray. In a duotone, the second color saturates the image. Duotones are commonly used with black and another color, but can be used with any combination of colors. Since duotones are more saturated, they appear to be more textured, and the image would seem to have more detail.

These are the images I started with when working with my duotone image, and below is my final duotone project.
